Disappointing Day for Port'S Seniors (3/5/08)

The Cygnet Football Club’s Senior team created history for all the wrong reasons last Saturday, going down to Triabunna by 2 points in a thrilling match. The Reserves fell over the line in their game, and the Colts registered another solid victory, their fourth for the season. The young Colt’s knew that the long trip guaranteed a very early start to the day, and that the Triabunna boy’s would be difficult to get over on their home ground. It took till after half time for the boy’s to start to get fully on top of the young Kangaroos, and hold a handy lead at three quarter time. Ben Halton, Sam Dean & Tom Nichols ensured that the Port kept their noses in front, but the young Triabunna side hit back. However, the Port steadied under pressure and kicked way to record a good 34 point victory.

Best players included, Ben Halton, Sam Dean, Tom Nichols and Tyler Cowen. Adam Duggan and Dean Atkinson provided solid support all day.

Major goal-scorers were Tyler Cowen who completed a good day with 3, Tom Nichols who also contributed 3, while Ben Halton, Sam Dean and Damian Duggan added 2 apiece. All in all, a good win by the Colts against some bigger Triabunna boys. The Reserves again struggled for numbers, but still took to the ground looking for their second win of the season. They started well getting plenty of the football into our forward line, but wayward kicking for goal, all day, kept Triabunna in the match. Whenever the Port managed to get in front, to Triabunna’s credit they pegged them back. In a real arm wrestle to the siren, Triabunna had a chance to steal the game with a late shot on goal but missed, leaving the Port to fall over the line by 3 points. The side was well served by Peter Roberts who must be getting close to Senior selection ably supported by Stuart Eaton who is having a super start to the season. Youngster James Harvey found plenty of the football while Paul Cowen, Sam Haughland and Rohan Gudden all played their usual solid, reliable games. Major goal-scorers were Jason Strong with 4, which easily could have been 10 if he had his kicking boot on.

Without taking away from Triabunna’s historic victory, the less said about the Senior game the better. In what should have been a very winnable game, a lack of respect for the opposition, lack of passion and desire to win the football, and very little preparedness to help each other as teammates provided the Kangaroos the sniff they have been waiting for to get over the line. A defendable three quarter time lead was dwindled away too easily. It is time for the Senior side to regain respect in the football and general community and that task starts this week against Sorell at home, in what will be a huge challenge and test of character for the players. Injuries and player availability have never been, and will not be a legitimate excuse for poor performance. Better players were extremely hard to find, but Mitch Direen, Ben Dean and Shane Clark tried to rally the side. Michael Darcy threw his body around in numerous positions in an attempt to motivate his players, while Rhys Jennings and Will Dean demonstrated they are young players with bright futures. Major goal-scorers were Jamie Direen with 4, while Shane Clark and Aaron Creek added 2 each. While a terribly disappointing result for the Club, to see Triabunna’s players, supporters and staff huddling in the middle of the ground in celebration after the final siren brings home the importance of the role that sporting Clubs do play in our small communities. Congratulations to Buck Anderton and their volunteers for sticking by the Club through so many tough seasons. You thoroughly deserved your win! This week football returns to the Port against Sorell, so get along and cheer all sides on to what will hopefully be three victories for the Club.

“Port Volunteer of the Week”
This week’s volunteers of the week are Jack and Mary Synnott. Both life members, Jack (a past player, coach and president) and Mary have been involved with the Club for countless years, and organise players teas with a faithful group of helpers each Thursday night for the players. Both rarely miss the chance to watch the Port play, with a number of family members involved on and off the ground with the Club. We appreciate your support Jack and Mary!
